Save the Rhino International
“Thanks to Save the Rhino Trust’s expert knowledge and the organisation’s position as a trusted partner to local communities and government agencies, it plays a crucial role in Namibian rhino conservation. We have proudly supported the Trust’s efforts since our formation in the early 1990s. Throughout this time, despite much change and many significant challenges - including the intense poaching crisis and extreme droughts – Save the Rhino Trust has remained committed to its core mission. Its day-to-day work to protect and monitor free-roaming black rhinos is impressive, and its continued dedication to rhino conservation is hugely appreciated." - Cathy Dean, CEO, Save the Rhino International |
USAID
"Upon completion of service as the head of a USAID funded wildlife protection program that assisted 13 partners in five countries, I would to express my thanks for your dedication and professionalism as a key partner during the past 5 1/2 years. You succeeded in preventing the illegal killing of black rhinos as well as uplifting the lives of local communities through the Rhino Ranger Program. It was indeed an honor to have worked with you and the Rhino Rangers." Having been a supporter of SRT for over a decade, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have been able to witness the incredible impact that a small, dynamic and strong team have had in the Kunene region. We recognise the passion that has gone into empowering local communities, supporting community conservancies and protecting the largest and thriving population of free-roaming black rhinos in Africa. TNC are proud to partner with SRT and witness their continued growth in Namibia. They are a perfect example of an organisation using local cost model to maximise impact, produce tangible results, and remain conscious of ensuring sustainability.

David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation
'David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation have enjoyed a fantastic partnership with Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia since 1994. SRT’s outstanding work to protect the critically endangered black rhino in the Kunene and Erongo regions have been ground-breaking, and they have rightly been recognised for their conservation efforts at an international level. Their efforts have been instrumental in bringing the black rhino population back from the brink of extinction in 1980s, with the population of rhinos growing to such an extent that they are now protecting one of the world’s last critical strongholds. SRT’s anti-poaching work has been extremely successful, especially in the last five years when they have reduced poaching rates by 80%. The current spell of over two years with no rhino poaching in the areas in which they operate is testament to SRT’s fantastic work, especially given the threats to rhinos and high poaching rates in the rest of Namibia and neighbouring South Africa. Key to SRT’s success has been the ‘boots on the ground’ approach, with a large number of rangers patrolling huge distances each year. Equally important has been SRT’s insistence on hiring rangers from the local community in addition to wider community engagement efforts. The support they provide for rangers, including equipment, rations, sighting bonuses and transport have all helped develop a sense of ownership and pride about protecting rhinos both amongst rangers and in the wider communities. Their annual ranger awards have been a fantastic way of motivating rangers and recognising them for the outstanding, challenging and often dangerous work that they do. SRT’s outstanding community work have ensured that local people also benefit greatly from the protection of rhinos. The Reading with Rhinos programme has helped thousands of children develop their literacy skills, as well as giving them a greater appreciation of rhinos. The events SRT organise in the community for World Rhino Day have proven extremely popular, in particular the football tournaments which have been very successful in fostering a sense of pride about rhinos amongst the community’s youth. DSWF are proud to work with SRT in Namibia and we look forward to continuing this relationship for many more years to come.'
